Soaking up the sun

I LOVE warm weather. I was born in the summer and I’ve always been happiest when it’s warm and sunny outside. Every winter I vow to spend more time outside and really enjoy the warm weather while it’s here. But then I get caught up in things at my computer and on TV and somehow don’t make it outside too often.

But this year I’m already off to a good start on changing that.

1. I’m on a kickball team. Yes, KICKBALL, like you played in elementary school. But this time, imagine a bunch of 20-50 year olds (some of whom take their kickball VERY seriously) running bases and playing in an actual kickball league, and there we are. This is our team’s first year playing however, so we’re not exactly great on the field. We try! We’re getting better!

But, um, we do have a losing streak so far and the season is half over. But it’s a lot of fun and that’s what matters, right?

I’m the catcher for our team and last week I almost had my moment of glory by catching the ball at home plate just a second before the runner got there.

But then he ran into me and knocked the ball out of my hands and the umpire called him safe. I need super glue for my hands.

2. The Husband and I finally did something we’ve been talking about for a long time–we bought kayaks! We had the hardest time getting these kayaks because it seemed that no one wanted to give good customer service long enough to actually sell and give us the kayaks. After three different places and a month of trying to get them, we finally bought two kayaks two weeks ago. We’ve been paddling around a pond near our house. I was really nervous that I’d fall out of the boat and look goofy, but it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. Plus it’s great exercise for my arms.

And then I did fall into the pond and look goofy. But it was at the shoreline, while I was trying to get out of the kayak. Instead of falling forward onto the sand, I fell backward into the water and got soaked.

But hey, at least it was a warm day!

3. Our garden has been planted, which was more time spent outside. I love spring and summer because I love all the fresh fruits and vegetables that pop up everywhere. In a couple more weeks, we’ll go pick strawberries at a local farm. We started doing that a couple years ago and love it. I love having lots of strawberries hidden away in the freezer for smoothies and strawberry shortcakes all year long. And the ones we pick always taste way better than the ones from the grocery stores.

I hope you all are enjoying the warm weather if you have it where you live too. Even though today isn’t supposed to be a great day to be outside in North Carolina, because we’re expecting severe storms. But I’m hoping for a nice weekend outside. After the winter, which feels as if it lasts FOREVER, I’m always very, very happy to welcome spring.
