Top Ten Books I Wish I’d Read as a Kid

I read a lot as a kid. I always begged my mom to take me to the library or buy me a new book to read. But still, there are some books that I didn’t read back then that I wish I had.

  1. Little House on the Prairie books – I’ve always loved historicals and history in general, especially anything between the years 1770 and 1910 (I know, that’s a big range, but bear with me). So I don’t know WHY I never read the Little House books as a kid. I really wish I had!
  2. The Neverending Story – I was obsessed with the movie (and still am), so why did I never read the book?
  3. Roald Dahl’s books – I read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator in high school, but I wish I’d read them sooner. I also wish I’d read any of his other books.
  4. The Chronicles of Narnia series – I knew what the stories were about as a kid, but I never did get around to reading them. I’ll be reading the entire series this year to make up for lost time.
  5. Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH – This is another where I loved the movie, but never read the book. Actually, I didn’t know it was a book until I was an adult.
  6. Treasure Island – Yes, I just read this recently and enjoyed it, but I think I would have really loved it as a kid. I saw movie versions of it as a kid, so I should have read the book too.
  7. Tuck Everlasting – I actually now own a copy of this, but I read it a few years ago as an adult. Loved it and really wish I had read it much sooner!
  8. Where the Wild Things Are – Um, I still have never read this. I saw the movie last year. And I knew what the book was about, but I just never read it as a kid.

I can only think of eight that I wish I’d read! I tried to get ideas from other people’s lists to fill out the last two, but most of the books they mentioned are ones that I did read (I told you, I read A LOT).

What books do you wish you’d read when you were younger?

Ag, I love Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH sooo much and there are so many people who’ve never read the book, only seen the movie! I feel like I should go on a mission, evangelizing about the book! 🙂

I’ll have to hunt down a copy and read it then! I watched the movie a lot as a kid, but had never heard of the book until just a few years ago. 🙁
