Camp NaNoWriMo

Camp-NaNoWriMo-2013-Winner-Campfire-Facebook-ProfileI used Grammarly to grammar check this post, because my brain is mush from writing 30,000 words in a month.

I didn’t talk much about it on Facebook or Twitter, but I did participate in Camp NaNoWriMo during July. I originally wanted to write 50,000 words, but after the first couple of days of the month I realized that wasn’t going to happen. I decided not to put so much pressure on myself and dropped my goal to 30,000. I’m happy to report that I did meet my goal. I wrote 30,018 words during July!

It’s a completely new book, with all new characters I’ve never written about before. The main character is also pretty different from me, so it’s been interesting to write from her point of view. I like fast drafting because I don’t allow myself to think too much about what I’m writing. I’m only concerned with getting a basic framework of a story down that I can build from later. Of course, that doesn’t always mean that fast drafting makes a good story, but it does make a story. At this point, I just want to know who these characters are and what they want, and then I can make the story better during revisions. Revision is the important part for me, the time when the story really starts to shine.

I could write a fast draft anytime I want, but I always love the fellowship that comes with NaNoWriMo-type events. I like knowing that a bunch of other people are pushing themselves as hard as I am.

Did any of you participate in Camp NaNoWriMo? Or are you planning to take part in NaNoWriMo this November?
