Easily distracted

It’s March already? I’m convinced that time keeps speeding up. That reminds me that I read an article about the perception of time passing quickly as we get older recently…. Here it is. I thought it was interesting that the way we assess time in our brains is still a mystery to scientists!

(I’m working on a book about someone who had severe head trauma from an accident as a child, so I’ve been reading about the human brain a lot lately.)

Sorry, can’t write right now. I gotta put out these Sim fires.

Since I’ve been at home during the past month and working as a full-time writer, I’ve found that I have to make to-do lists to keep myself on track or else I can easily get distracted by any number of thi–You know, I should really go see what my Sims are up to.

Ahem. The Sims 3 is one of my biggest distractions. I could easily play with my Sims world all day if I don’t watch myself, so I’ve been using a program from ToDoist.com to make my daily lists of what needs to be done. A lot of my tasks are repeats from day to day, but I also include household items that need to be done and anything else I need to work on outside of writing. I’ve never been the kind of person who keeps everything planned and organized, but this really helps me stay on track each day.

I also need to know what my overall monthly goals are. I don’t like using ToDoist for those because I don’t like for them to get mixed in with the daily tasks when the monthly ones are much more broad. For example, a monthly goal may be “Finish revisions on Rules.” But each day, I’ll have a task that says “Read through two chapters.” So each day I check off that task once I’ve read two chapters, but I don’t need to check off the overall “Finish revisions on Rules.” (Rules is a working title for one of my projects, by the way!)

So to help keep my monthly goals in front of me more often, here are March’s tasks:

  • Complete first revision on last Swans Landing book
  • Complete revision on Sophie
  • Read through Rules again
  • Write 25,000 words on November
  • Work on cover for Rules
  • Look into blog tours
  • Look into upcoming advertising

Will I get it all done? We’ll see at the end of the month. If I want to keep myself on track for planned releases coming later this year, I need to get these tasks done this month.

What are you working on during March?
