Top Ten Favorite Debut Books

From any year, my favorite debut books.

1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling – Okay, Sorcerer’s Stone isn’t my favorite of the series, but the fact that it introduced us to the phenomenon that is Harry Potter and Hogwarts makes it amazing.

2. Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl – The atmosphere of the story, the twists and turns that kept me guessing makes this one of my favorite debuts.

3. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa – This is one of my newest favorite series. I need The Iron Daughter and The Iron Queen ASAP.

4. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien – The book that made me fall in love with fantasy books.

5. Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway – I love Audrey’s wit and attitude as her life goes crazy.

6. Looking for Alaska by John Green – I’ll admit that An Abundance of Katherines is my favorite of his books, but Looking for Alaska made me cry and was an amazing debut.

7. Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier – Based on the “The Six Swans” fairy tale, I still love this book.

8. Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery – Yes, Emily is my favorite, but Anne launched Montgomery’s writing career and led to Emily and the other stories about Avonlea that became one of my favorite TV shows, Road to Avonlea.

9. A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce – Can you tell I like retellings? This one is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin and gives the story new life.

10. Across the Universe by Beth Revis – When I first heard about this book my reaction was, “You had me at ‘spaceship.'” Can’t wait for the next one.

And hey, I didn’t even include my own debut book (Something to Blog About) on the list. 😉 There are lots more debuts that I really enjoyed, but I kept it down to just ten for this meme.

So what are your favorite debuts?
