This isn’t a house, it’s a zoo

Somehow, stray cats seem to keep finding their way to my house. All of my cats were strays that we took in. Whenever someone offers us a kitten that their cat has just had, we always say no because we know that yet another stray cat will find its way to us soon enough.

So a couple weeks ago, when it snowed we ended up with another cat. There had been this orange tabby hanging out around our neighborhood for the last few months. The neighbors all didn’t know who he belonged to, though they had seen him. Of course, when I see a stray animal I do get all soft-hearted and rub them and hold them if they let me. The Husband is worse than I am though. He insists on feeding them. So then, of course, they keep coming back.

We had started calling the orange cat Butter because back when we first got married we’d had an orange tabby named Buttercup and this one looked just like him (although smaller. Buttercup was a fat cat and he’d had a broken leg that hadn’t healed correctly so he couldn’t walk very well. He was yet another stray that we had taken in). He’s very friendly and lets us hold him. And he absolutely LOVES the dogs. Cats always seem to love our border collie Chloe anyway. Every cat we have cuddles up with her and rubs their heads all over her. I don’t know if they think she’s a really big cat or what, but for some reason cats have always adored her as soon as they see her.

Anyway, the day before it snowed The Husband had kept looking outside for Butter, saying that we needed to bring him in the house so he wouldn’t freeze to death. We didn’t see him the night before, but then the next morning there he was, sitting in our backyard and crying. We brought him in, intending to let him stay while it was snowing so he could be warm. Before that day, Butter would come into the house for a minute or two, then cry to go back outside.

But I guess the snow traumatized him.

He hasn’t made any effort to get back outside since that day. He sometimes goes over to the door and looks outside, but as soon as we open it to let him out he runs back farther into the house, as if he’s saying, “Nope, I’m perfectly happy living here with you guys!”

So if you’re keeping count, that’s now FIVE cats we have living with us, plus two dogs. And we’re planning to get some chickens this spring. (The chickens, of course, will not be living inside the house.)

Soon I’m going to start charging admission to get into the Norris Family Zoo.

We now do not feel bad, we have NINE stays, all indoor now, 2 were adoptions but the other 7 were from our yard! NOW we have another that is sitting on our sliding door ledge at night and playing with our others thru the window!

Really do not want a 10th, and really do not think cats are made for outdoors, since it is clear this one is not feral.
