Have you all heard about the TV show 10 Things I Hate About You premiering this summer on ABC Famliy? Yes, it’s based on the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, which is my top favorite teen movie ever. I actually remember hearing a rumor about this show months ago, but then I think forgot all about it after my moment of “No way, they can’t do that!”
But anyway, it’s real and it’s coming. Extended promo here on YouTube (they disabled embedding so I can’t put it on my blog).
My first reaction is “No! How could you? It’s never going to be like the movie!” But then, although I know it can never replace the movie and I’m still a bit horrified that they’re making a TV show and changing things, I did laugh a bit while watching the promos. I like that Larry Miller plays the dad. He also played the dad in the movie, so he has to get the part right. Right? From the promo, the dad seems just as neurotic as he did in the movie.
I’m not sure what I think of Gregory Peck’s grandson stepping into Heath Ledger’s role. Heath Ledger IS Patrick Verona to me and for that matter, Julia Stiles IS Kat Stratford. It’s going to be weird to see other people playing these roles that I know so well since I’ve seen the movie a hundred times, but I’m willing to keep an open mind and take the TV for what it is, separate from the movie. It’s like when a book is turned into a movie and things get changed–the book is the book and the movie is the movie, so it’s best to enjoy them as separate entities.
It’s weird and I am still a bit horrified at the idea (and why are they doing a TV show ten years after the movie came out?), but I’ll watch a few episodes and make up my mind then. A plus is that the girl playing Kat was in Aliens in America, which I really enjoyed for the short time that it was on.
But still, they can’t ever top this:
