This neighborhood’s going to the…turkeys

There’s been a HUGE turkey walking around the yard a few houses down for the past couple of days. HUGE. He doesn’t even have himself all puffed out and he’s still a monster turkey.

So I figured there are only three explanations.

1 – My neighbors have gotten a pet turkey.

2 – My neighbors like free range food and are letting their Christmas dinner walk around their backyard for a week.

or

3 – A wild turkey has decided to take up residence in my neighbors’ backyard. Maybe he heard it’s a quiet area, low crime, and a nice place to raise a family.

We already knew there were wild turkeys near our neighborhood. We live out in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by cotton/bean/wheat fields and trees. We’d already seen wild turkeys in the fields around the corner a few times. But we’d never seen one walking around so close to our house. And he seems to be sticking around because he was still out there this morning.

I guess you know it’s the holidays when you start seeing turkeys everywhere.

We live in the woods, and sometimes see wild turkeys, usually in late September and October. They are scarce during November, though; they know about Thanksgiving! They are pretty brave, and have walked right up our driveway and sidewalk.

And people wonder where writers get their ideas from! You can’t possibly make something like that up. 🙂

Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
