I think I’m still recovering from the weekend. Or actually, recovering from Saturday since Sunday was just a lazy day at home, other than going to the grocery store. But on Saturday I had two big events: I was speaking at the luncheon during a workshop given by East Carolina University for teachers and librarians at noon and then that night I was a bridesmaid in my cousin’s wedding. I had really bad insomnia the night before (I’ve had it all weekend) and so I spent that day running on just four hours of sleep and didn’t get to bed until after midnight.
But I had a lot fun that day! The workshop was great and I was happy to hear the laughs as I spoke. I’m always a bit worried about whether the things I think are funny are actually funny to other people. I have nightmares in which my jokes are met with absolute silence and blank stares. Thankfully, that didn’t happen on Saturday! I shared with them my big Baby-Sitters Club secret and the fact that I was a child book thief. At signings and appearances, I usually speak to readers, so it’s fun to have a chance to speak to librarians and teachers about reading and books in general. And it was my first chance to talk publicly about Troy High, so that was fun!
Then the wedding was crazy, since it was at Camp Lejeune and we had to wait a long time to get a pass just to be allowed on base and so that made me late. The ceremony was at least half an hour late starting, but we finally got it done. And then we danced all night–the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, silly sixth grade school dance slow dances with my cousin Heather (the other bridesmaid), and spinning around and around in circles across the dance floor with my cousin’s four year old daughter and six year old son until I was too dizzy to stand up.
It’s strange now that this one very eventful day that I’ve been preparing for for months now is all over. I feel like I should still be getting things ready and remembering something else that needs to be done.
