Light pole: 1; Shana: 0

I have this huge mottled red and bruised spot on my right arm now because I ran into a wooden light pole yesterday in my backyard. It was all my dogs’ fault. We were outside and because we don’t have a fence, Daisy and Chloe have to be on leashes or else they’ll take off running after anyone or anything they see. Everything was fine until my neighbors’ dog Gizmo, who is a cute little brown puffball, came trotting along around the side of their garage. My dogs saw him and stood staring at him. He saw us and stopped, staring back. Then Gizmo decided to come into our yard and pee on the light pole.

Now Chloe is fifty pounds of nothing but muscle. I don’t know why this dog is so muscular when she does nothing but sleep all day, but she has in the past dragged me across our yard.

Whenever Chloe sees Gizmo, she wants to play with him but Gizmo likes to come close and then take off back to his house, teasing her. So when he visited our light pole, Chloe took off toward him and then Gizmo took off back home. I tried to pull back, but Chloe dug her feet into the ground, pulling against me. Daisy wasn’t any help either, trying to run after Chloe and Gizmo. And of course, neither one would listen to me yelling at them to stop. The only thing I could do was try to grab the light pole as we went by to give me some leverage to fight back with. I had to hook myself around it with my bare arm since I had a leash in each hand and I ended up scraping my arm all along one side of the wood–and when I was jerked back toward Chloe’s side, I ended up dropping Daisy’s leash anyway. Chloe finally stopped, after getting choked by her leash when I grabbed the pole, so I was then able to grab Daisy again just as she was about to go into the neighbors’ yard.

At least my arm no longer burns, though the bruise still hurts. And thankfully, no neighbors were outside to watch me being dragged across my backyard.
