I feel a lot better–at least the fever and body aches are gone–but my stomach still feels a bit queasy and I’m still not eating a lot. And getting up and driving to work has already worn me out. I discovered though if you want a quick way to lose weight just catch whatever I have. I lost almost four pounds in two days from being sick. Although, I can’t say that it’s a pleasant way to lose weight.
Only twelve days left before I head off to California for the American Library Association conference. I have never been west of Knoxville, Tennessee, so this is a big adventure for me. I’ve flown before, so I’m not nervous about changing planes or anything like that. The thing I’m nervous about? Getting a cab from the airport to the hotel when I land. And then from the hotel back to the airport when I leave. I have never, ever, ever ridden in a taxi. Why would I? I grew up twenty minutes outside of town and my family has always had their own vehicles and then I’ve always had my own vehicle since I got my license. So I’ve never had a reason to use a taxi. I know absolutely nothing about them. As long as I know what to expect, I’m fine. But if there’s even the tiniest thing that I have no idea what I’m in for, I get really nervous. And so that’s the thing that sticks out in my head right now. Forget the actual convention itself, I’m worried about taxis!
I’m hoping since I got sick this past weekend, that’ll be my sick quota for this month and I’ll be fine during my weekend in CA. And hopefully all the germs will be gone by then so I won’t spread them around the entire conference.
Typing this blog post has worn me out even more. Do you think anyone would notice if I put my head down and went to sleep?
Glad you’re feeling better! I hope you can take it easy on yourself until you’re back to 100%.
Many mid- to upper-end hotels have hand-in-glove relationships with chauffers who are willing to offer substantial discounts to round-trip customers. It might be a bit more money than a cab, but oftentimes, it’s not. You might want to call the hotel consierge and ask about this possibility. At the end/tail end of a long flight, it’s sure nice to have a driver holding up a sign with your name on it…
Thanks!
Having a driver holding up sign with my name on it would be so nice after flying all day… 🙂
Just make sure you find where official taxis are…when I was in NYC I got confused about where to go. There are not-yellow cab drivers in NYC who stand there by the doors asking if anybody needs a taxi when you come off the plane and I almost ended up in this weird SUV carpooling situation because I was confused. Not only that but he was charging as much as a yellow cab! So just make sure you go to the right spot; ask an airport employee if you’re not sure.
Beyond that, once you get in the cab it should be fine. Some cab drivers are quiet and listen to music, some chat with you a little, they all drive kind of scary but I guess people rarely die, and, um, you get there and pay the fare and tip them, the end!
Thanks! I’ll be sure to watch out for those!
Hey, I just sent you an e-mail about getting together at ALA with some phone numbers and stuff to your shana (at) shananorris address. I hope we can meet up!
About taxis, the official taxi pick-up area should be pretty well-marked (and with signs directing you to it in the airport). Then just tell the driver where you want to go and you’re set. Every one I’ve ever been in, you can see the meter from the back seat, so you can be paying attention to about how much it will be.
Hope to see you soon!
