My seventeen year old cousin has recently discovered reading. She never liked to read much before, but in the last few months, as my grandmother has told me, Heather is reading all the time. Usually a book a day. Heather was telling me on Saturday how she had gone to the library to request a book from another library and the guy at the counter knew her last name without her having to tell him because she’d been requesting so many books lately.
The Husband and I decided to go to Sonic last night for supper, which is in a nearby city (we don’t have a Sonic in the town I live in, a fact that always deeply saddens me because I love Sonic’s strawberry smoothies even though they’re REALLY high in calories and carbohydrates). We decided to stop by the bookstore while we were there. As we walked across the parking lot I saw a Mustang and thought, “That person has a car just like Heather’s…”
And then who should we see walking out of the clothing store next door and heading toward the bookstore? Heather and her friend. Off to get more books since she had finished all the ones she got from the library and was waiting on her requested ones.
I’m really enjoying her newfound love of reading because finally I have someone to talk about all the YA books I love with, even though she is within the target age range and I’m not. She had stayed up all night finishing Sarah Dessen’s Just Listen Friday night, so I had recommended The Truth About Forever to her, which is my favorite Sarah Dessen book. And I recommended a few other authors that I know through blogs and the blue board. Heather told her friend last night, “I could just go to Shana’s library in her living room and find some books to read. She’ll tell me what’s good!”
(The book I picked up last night at the bookstore was Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why, which I can’t wait to start on, but I’m trying to hold out until I finish the book I’m currently reading [Meg Cabot’s Size 14 is Not Fat Either].)
That’s fun you have someone to talk to about YA books. I love when my ten year old nephew comes to visit for a similar reason: because we get to talk about all the Disney channel shows and movies.
And The Truth about Forever is also my favorite Dessen book, followed closely by This Lullaby.
Hope you like Size 14 is Not Fat Either. I love that series, because i love Meg Cabot and I love mysteries. I’m so excited Big Boned is coming out soon 🙂
I am enjoying Size 14! I’ve never really been a big fan of mysteries (although one of my favorite books ever–The Westing Game–is a mystery…) but I read Size 12 because I’m a big Meg Cabot fan and loved it. I love the humor she wraps in with the mystery. 😀
I’m a huge mystery fan and a HUGE Meg Cabot fan, so that series is a no brainer. I love Cooper. He’s one of my favorite love interests for one of Meg’s books. He’s about a tie with Jesse from Mediator.
I love to see teens fall in love with reading too! 🙂
