Staying motivated

In the past, I’ve started early morning workout routines during the summer with good intentions. It’s easy to get myself up on warm mornings. Not so easy once the weather starts cooling off. Mornings here have been chilly lately and already I don’t want to get out of bed to that cold air.

But I’m trying to stay on track with walking on my treadmill so I figured out a solution to help motivate me to get up–assign certain reading as “treadmill only.” Right now I’m reading Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy by Ally Carter, the sequel to I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You. (If you haven’t read these books yet, go do it soon!) I was excited for Cross My Heart to come out because I had loved the first book. But instead of reading it really fast in one sitting like I would normally do, I decided I can only read it each morning while I’m walking on the treadmill.

Which helps get me out of bed, believe me. This morning I really, REALLY didn’t want to get out from under the covers, but I wanted to know what was going to happen next in Cross My Heart so I managed to drag myself up and onto the treadmill. Except for the two days I was sick last week, I’ve been walking consistently and feeling better throughout the day. I’m still only walking for 15 minutes, but I am now doing it at 3mph. I’ll slowly build up my time to 30 minutes, adding five minutes each week.

Well, just as long as The Husband doesn’t break my treadmill by trying to get on it at the same time I am again, like he decided to do yesterday. He thought it would be funny for both of us to walk at the same time. It wasn’t. He stumbled, hit my back so hard he knocked the wind out of me, and nearly fell into the china cabinet. The treadmill says it holds up to 250 pounds and him + me = more than 250 pounds, so it made a grinding noise for the five seconds until he fell off. Only had the thing just over a week and he’s already trying to break it!
