When bad things happen in the world, I turn even more toward things I loved as a kid, when the things going on outside my house didn’t affect me. I’m a big Baby-Sitters Club fan and have most of the books in two huge stacks in my computer room.
I saw this article linked from a BSC blog I read: Fans grow up, stay loyal to the Baby-sitters Club.
“Dozens of 20-somethings have returned to the popular books about a group of teenage baby sitters. They collect the books, blog about them and even participate in online role-playing games to update characters’ story lines past where they ended when the series concluded in 2000.
…The fans agree that they remain attracted to the books because they used to, and still do, relate to the characters. Whether you’re bossy like Kristy, shy like Mary Anne or diabetic like Stacey — and everyone thought they were diabetic after reading about Stacey — there’s a match for each reader.
(The part I bolded in that last paragraph is so true. I just knew I had diabetes after reading The Truth About Stacey. Every time I was thirsty, my head screamed, “DIABETES!!”)
Wouldn’t it be nice if life were like a Baby-Sitters Club book? Where nothing bad really happened–kids who were thought to be kidnapped were really just lost and would be found within a few days, supposed crazed killers were really just middle school boys playing a trick on the girls they liked, and after 15 chapters everything always turned out well, with a pizza party to celebrate. With the events we see on the news every day, it doesn’t surprise me that so many of us try to hold on to one small part of childhood.
I loved the Babysitter’s Club so much! I was a huge Stacey fan. I just knew we would have been friends; we both lived in NY after all!
Yes, I was shy and identified with Mary Ann. I remember when she got that ugly haircut! Although I also sometimes identified with artsy Claudia. Awww! Now I want to read some BSC!
I loved the babysitters club too. I think I was a cross between Mary Ann and Mallory. Sweet Valley High too… the reality of being a teenager was such a disappointment after those books!
I loved that article! Everything in the BSC universe is so pure and innocent ( well except for Claudia and the Awful Truth and others ).. but the kids are so pure and innocent.
I agree.
May I send this link to the news editor who didn’t think my BSC articles would have an audience?!
P.S. I did the same thing re: thirsty!!
