We went by the car wash yesterday while we were out getting pizza because my car was covered in pollen. We had our dog Chloe with us (she rides with us to most places where we don’t have to get out of the car). The Husband got out to clean my car while I stayed inside with Chloe.
We knew already that Chloe was afraid of loud noises, people yelling (I think she thinks they’re yelling at her because she’s in trouble for something), and big trucks driving by while she’s outside. Now we know she’s afraid of the car wash. It wasn’t one of those automatic ones that you just sit in while the machines do the work, it was one that you have to spray the car yourself and rub the brush over it. Chloe climbed into my lap for protection while she watched the bubbles fall down the windows. She weighed 50 pounds at her last vet visit in January, so she’s not exactly a lap dog. But I let her sit in my lap anyway and talked soothingly to her. She was trembling and did so for a while after we left.
She’s definitely our big baby. She’s even afraid of other dogs her size. The only dog she spends time with is the in-laws’ Pekingese, so she’s not used to dogs bigger than a third of her size.
Hi, I hope you don’t mind me adding you. I saw you’re a YA author and you love the Office, so I was like, I HAVE TO ADD HER. I saw you on Crissa’s friends.
Your book sounds adorable.
Echo is afraid of going anywhere in the car. We should try to desensitize him one of these days. It’s sheer panic–panting, hyperventilating, shivering. Going through a car wash would be unthinkable.
And he’s terrified of telephone repair men who use loud walkie-talkies. So they are like SCARY, LOUD GIANTS.
