Life with Chloe

My dog keeps me constantly amused. Chloe is about fourteen months old now, a Border Collie mix, and has her own unique personality. She’s so different from the dog we had before her, Missy, who was a small red-haired Pekingese. Missy was already at least five years old when we took her in and had nowhere near the energy that Chloe does. (Missy got really sick last year and after a month of taking her to the vet and trying to figure out what was best for her, we made the decision to put her to sleep.) I try not to compare Chloe to the way Missy was, because they’re two different breeds, different sizes, different ages, and just entirely different dogs. But having Chloe is so different from having Missy, who was so mellow and quiet and liked to sleep. Chloe is always on the move.

Last night I was working on GIRLFRIEND in the living room after the husband had left for work and I kept hearing strange noises coming from the bedroom. I got up to investigate and found Chloe on the bed, having a great time rolling around under the covers and making snorting noises. When I laughed, she pulled her head out from under the covers and gave me this look like she was embarrassed she’d been caught.

We have a big crate that she stays in if we both have to be gone during the day because she’s still in the chewing stage. (She has already chewed two holes in our wall during the night.) The crate is next to the couch and Chloe loves to jump onto the couch and then walk on top of her crate. She’s a medium sized dog, weighs about forty pounds, and just stands there on top of the crate, looking around at everyone. I know she’s thinking, “Haha, I’m on top of my crate! What are you going to do about it?”

But as big and hyper as she is, Chloe is really just a big baby. She absolutely refuses to go outside if there are tractors in the field behind our house. If one of our neighbors leans out their back door to yell at their dogs to stop barking while I’m out with Chloe, she’ll take off back toward the house, I’m assuming because she thinks the neighbors are yelling at her. Any time she gets scared of a strange noise, she has to jump in our laps so we can protect her rather than the other way around.

She’s been in our lives just over a year now and she is definitely our baby. Anytime we pay attention to the cats, Chloe has to push her way in to make sure she gets attention too. It’s hard to believe just a year ago she looked like this:

And now she looks like this:

Aw, Pepper is a cutie! Chloe came from the local SPCA shelter. She was with her two sisters, who were active and friendly when we stopped at their cage, but Chloe sat near the back chewing on a toy by herself. She looked so cute, we had to take her home. 😀

Our dog, Susia (Spanish for dirty because she used to always be so) has a very similar facial expression as Chloe. A sort of humble look.

I bet they’d be great friends!
