Progress and growing older

Thanks to not getting enough sleep the last two nights, I’ve made a lot of progress on my current revision of LIBBY. The original manuscript was 229 pages and I’m about 80 pages into the revision. Also, I just love Libby as a character and so I want to keep going and going whenever I’m working through it. Part of me thinks that a writer having a favorite character from their own books is like a parent having a favorite child. But… *whispers so the other characters won’t hear* Libby is my favorite so far. I actually first created Libby ten years ago and back then she was much more angsty. I tried her in several different stories, but could never find the right fit. She’s become funny and overly dramatic since then, and I think this book is the one that suits her best.

But I do have to add that Angel, the antagonist of the book, is also very fun to write because she’s so snarky. Angel was also created ten years ago along with Libby, but back then she was just bitchy and troubled. Angel and Libby grew with each other over the years (for the better!).

(Three other characters in the current book were also created ten years ago: Libby’s single mom, Libby’s cousin Roger, and her best friend Keisha. Everyone else in the book is entirely new, although they have pieces of their old counterparts.)

The husband’s and my birthday-week-and-a-half is coming up soon. His birthday is August 10 and mine is August 19, so I feel like I’m in the birthday mood for that entire timespan. Unfortunately, this year the husband is working overnights the week of his birthday AND has to work the day of my birthday.

Hey, maybe the love will shine through with Libby… I worry, too, that people will not like my favorite character, but it seems that they always do, the ones who have read my work in which he appears.
